History begins at home. Thanks to the cooperation of
Michelle Henry, Chautauqua County Historian, we have a full
retinue of research resources available for discovering the
history of the county. The information below contains
contact information and many pages contain hours of operations
and lists of specialized collections.

- This site was
developed by Pam Brown, Historian for the Village of
Panama, through funding from the New York State
Archives Local Government Records Management
Improvement Fund and with cooperation from many
municipal clerks and historians It is intended to
teach teachers about local history using primary
source documents from municipalities in Chautauqua
County. Interesting collection of local documents,
photographs, maps and DBQ's for your students.

County Clerk: The county clerk provides services to
the general public. These include recording of deeds and other
land-related records, filing of business certificates, court
related documents, fishing/hunting license sales and
passports.

Historic Agencies: We have 26
agencies listed from across the county. These are
historical societies, museums, and historical centers.

Historic
Sites: This will be a page of tremendous growth.
Currently we have a small list, but local historians are
compiling additional sites. Check back soon.

history begins with the people responsible for it compilation.
This page contains the contact information for 41 municipal
historians.

Libraries: The majority of
Chautauqua County libraries house collections of local
historical documents. The also house the personnel to
assist you in discovering local history.

Museums: There are 13 historical
museums on this page from across the county.

Chautauqua County Historical Publications: There
are hundreds of publications available on Chautauqua County
History. Atlases; Census documents from 1790 on;
Cemetery Indexes; Community, Corporate, Family, Individual,
Military and Regional Histories; Newspaper Indexes and many
many Reference Materials. These pages contain the
inventory housed in the archives of the Chautauqua County
Clerks office under the direction of County Historian Michelle
Henry.

Town Clerks: Vast amounts of
local information from deeds, property transfers, and
genealogical materials are under the supervision of Town
Clerk. They are a tremendous resources.
