*A.  On the left side, visit the Photograph Database.  Select and print 4 pictures that capture the essence and tragedy of the Civil War.  I might recommend the topics of Medical, Prisoner (check photo A956), Lincoln Assassination.  Analyze each photograph and explain your choice in regards to essence and tragedy.

Features 15 fictional Civil War Stories....however, our focus will be the news articles, illustrations and cartoons specifically from Harpers during the actual historical events.  Scroll down to the "Additional Material Relevant".

*Select Three Topics of interest and find ONE Harper's Weekly article for each that you believe is specifically insightful, patriotic or troubling. Print each of your choices, underline the key components and explain your choice.

Simply study the cartoon and read the article.  We will later compare this data with the After The Fact article in the Nation of Nations Textbook.

6.  Civil War Music and Poetry

Select at least TWO Union Songs and Two Confederate Songs--read the lyrics and then click on the Music Icon to hear the melody.  Print ONE SONG FROM EACH SIDE (other than Battle Hymn of the Republic and Dixie)  that mirrors the perspective of each side in fighting the war.  Underline the lyrics that prove your point.

Click on Newspapers indexed by Topic.   View Articles under the Eve of War and The War Years.  Select TWO Topics under each Heading.  Review the information from Augusta and Franklin on the topic. List the Topic and In one paragraph summarize the perspectives of each township.

8.  A Biography of America at  http://learner.org/resources/series123.html#  is an exceptional video instructional series for high school and college students produced by WGBH Boston in cooperation with the Library of Congress and the National Archives and Records Administration.  These thirty minute lectures incorporate first person narratives, photographs, film footage and documents related to various historical time periods (Twenty-six lectures listed below  FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT VIEW:   The Civil War) .
