    National Council on Economic Education   Developed by the National Council on Economic Education, EconEdLink provides teachers and students with lessons and classroom learning activities based on economics topics in the news and real-time economics data. EconEdLink content is designed to help integrate economic concepts across the curriculum as outlined in the Voluntary National Content Standards in Economics.

  • EDSITEment
    National Endowment for the Humanities  Presented by the National Endowment for the Humanities, EDSITEment features lesson plans and additional classroom resources in art and culture, literature and language arts, foreign language, and history and social studies. It also serves as a gateway to the best humanities sites on the Web, and it features a monthly theme-based teaching resource calendar.

  • Xpeditions
    National Geographic Society   Developed by the National Geographic Society, Xpeditions brings rich, standards-based geography content to teachers and students. This site includes materials for K-12 teachers and students and their families, including an interactive atlas with over 1,600 printable maps and Xpedition Hall, a virtual learning museum with exhibits aligned to the U.S. National Geography Standards.

  • Smithsonian
    National Museum of American History   The National Museum of American History collects, preserves and displays American heritage in the areas of social, political, cultural, scientific and military history. Documenting the American experience from Colonial times to the present, the museum looks at growth and change in the United States. This Partner site is currently under development.

    ThinkfinityNY, a Web-based resource that offers 2,500-plus lessons for teachers, each lesson aligned with the New York State Standards. This program, available to all N.Y. State educators at no cost, was developed jointly with the New York State Education Department (NYSED), New York State Teacher Centers, New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), Thinkfinity and MCI. ~

    The lessons are organized and can be accessed according to the state’s Learning Standards, key ideas, performance indicators, grade levels and content areas. A simple click of the mouse navigates the user through the lessons.

    Historical Time Period:      Gilded Age

    Title of the Lesson Plan:  Two Unreconciled Strivings—African American Identity in the Gilded Age

    Grade Level:                        High School (Grade 11)

    General Description:         Analyzes primary sources of the African American experience during the Gilded Age.  Includes a variety of activities to choose from, including a response journal, which could be an effective assessment tool on its own.

    Title of the Lesson Plan:  Affidavit and Flyers from the Chinese Boycott Case

    General Description:         Four documents are featured to analyze the experience of Chinese immigrants in relation to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.  Several activities are given for individual or group assignment and most can be done off-line.

    Title of the Lesson Plan:  From Jim Crow to Linda Brown

    Grade Level:                        High School (Grade 11)

    General Description:         This lesson traces the African-American experience in the first half of the 20th century to help lay a foundation for a broader understanding of the modern Civil Rights Movement. It includes all the resources needed and many activities to choose from.  Can easily be used in part and can include a student web research component that utilizes books, documents, manuscripts, maps, music, plays, and film.

    Title of the Lesson Plan:  After Reconstruction:  Problems of African-Americans in the South

    Grade Level:                        High School (Grade 11)

    General Description:         This lesson makes use of primary and secondary sources, including pamphlets, letters, laws, interviews and timelines.  These sources, combined with research assignments and group work help students to identify problems facing African-Americans during Reconstruction and then generate possible remedies.

    General Description:         This lesson provides activities to go along with the PBS documentary “The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow.”  Activity One offers a very comprehensive look at the main ideas and events of the video and generated excellent discussion.

    Title of the Lesson Plan:  Black Pioneers:  Building African American Communities During Jim Crow

    Grade Level:                        High School (Grade 11)

    General Description:         This outstanding lesson uses the documentary “The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow” to have students examine the formation of planned African-American communities in the United States.  It introduces students to main early leaders of the African American community, and utilizes several written first-hand accounts in a primary source activity.  The lesson culminates with a debate over the importance of black communities today.

    Title of the Lesson Plan:  Photographs of Lewis Hine:  Documentation of Child Labor

    Grade Level:                        Middle or High School

    General Description:         This lesson features an outstanding collection of 16 Lewis Hine photographs depicting children in various jobs around the country.  A straightforward lesson, it uses photo analysis as the main activity.
