US History Standards

The development of proposed national History Standards was administered by the National Center for History in the Schools at the University of California, Los Angeles under the guidance of the National Council for History Standards. The standards were developed, in 1996, with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the U.S. Department of Education.

National Level Education Information

Much like New York State Department of Education Learning Standards, a national set of criteria from which to teach and measure educational practices and student achievement has been designed.  In the interest of presenting both state and federal expectations for teaching, we include the information from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) of the National Center for Educational Statistics

The National Assessment of Educational Progress also known as "the Nation's Report Card", provides a series of measurable skills in various subject areas.  This is similar to the Learning Standards developed by the New York State Department of Education.

Each NAEP assessment is built around an organizing framework, which is the blueprint that guides the development of the assessment instrument and determines the content to be assessed.

Frameworks capture a range of subject-specific content and thinking skills needed by students in order to deal with the complex issues they encounter inside and outside their classrooms.

The following links connect to sites that define the content and skills determined necessary for each curriculum area and the framework on which they were based (if available).
