THE THORNY ISSUE OF COPYRIGHT
As
you review the issues of copyright, a legal firm
handling many songs for major studios has cited:
I am of the opinion that all uses of copyrighted song
material need prior approval before any use beyond
listening to the recording. A song is recorded and
placed in CD format (as an example), that CD is then
sold in stores and purchased by an individual for the
individual's listening pleasure. It cannot be copied,
parodied, manipulated, place in a film used in a TV
program, etc without prior permission from the
copyright owner or their representative. This is what
the copyright protection is for.
In this specific case, we are the authorized
representatives of the two Billy Joel entities
JOELSONGS and IMPULSIVE MUSIC. We do sometimes
authorize gratis use of the song WE DIDN'T START THE
FIRE for educational purposes. But I would venture to
say that, for protection against unauthorized use, the
school or teacher should have written permission
granting such use.
