7. Level of
Student Involvement

and 5th Grade
As you work
through the process with your students, please
keep a
"journal"/record of what both you and your students
experience...both
positive and problem areas. We ask all
participants to do
this and to write a reflective piece
upon
completion...many use their "journal" to complete it.
When others read
your proposal and have the notes and
reflective piece
to follow the progress, they will be able
to get ideas for
their own projects or to design units/lessons
for their classes.
The final piece is
a reflection that serves as an evaluation. In it you should address
what you learned, what you would and would not do again, student
response, how it changed instruction and will contribute to academic
achievement.
We are required to
submit this information as part of the TAH Grant. They need to know
that the Grant is making a difference in our classrooms and the
students are benefiting academically.
Please identify
yourself by name, school/district, and content/grade.

The Revolutionary
War Webquest has been used with 5th grade students
preparing for the Social Studies test, which is administered during
November.
This type of an
activity invites students to embrace technology while
researching/reviewing the Revolutionary War. It teaches students
how to navigate through websites. They need to know where the links
take them in, addition to the navigational buttons (ie “Back
Button”).
One of the areas
where students have difficulty on state tests is reading charts.
The chart in this assignment helps them to read a chart for
information. In the future, I would make this chart more in depth.
I would have them locate additional material so they could continue
to build on this skill.
Students have a
tendency to dislike doing research. One comment that I heard from
students was that they liked the project even though they “still had
to read.” They were starting to realize that although they were
using the computers and on the Internet, they still needed to know
how to read.
As an extension to
this activity, I would like to see the students take this further
and create a larger project. It could be in the form of a written
report, PowerPoint Slideshow, or Podcast.
I believe that teaching needs to
embrace the technology that is available and create projects that
students can relate to. Students were able to relate to this
activity because it was utilizing their prior knowledge, expanding
their knowledge, all while using the tools they like.
