National History Day: EVALUATION
While I believe NHD to be a valuable learning
experience for students, there are some limitations which can make
it difficult for a
district to implement the program.
In spite of a fantastic start to the CLCS history Day program, I
only had one team going to the state competition.
Many groups dropped out once the Semester changed and they already
had credit in their class for completing the project. Others had
"plans" for that day,
and I think there were others who were afraid of judges!
In spite of this, the students who did participate had a positive experience and look forward to participating again. They learned a great deal about their topic
and learned a whole lot of technology.
Some issues which still need to be addressed are as follows:
1. Lack of a local regional contest. It was difficult to convince my district to pay a bus driver and transportation costs to send two students to Elmira to compete
against no one (they were the only senior documentary from the region) Fortunately, the regional coordinator was willing to work with us on this and allowed a

You may already have this in the works – but a History Day presentation at our new Council meeting might be beneficial to those who were unable to make the fall training.
You might also want to consider category specific training (Creating Historical Documentaries, Creating an Effective Exhibit Board . . . )
2. District Cost. While TAH covered the cost of hotel rooms, the district had to cover a driver, a driver’s room, and transportation expenses.
Perhaps one bus for all TAH schools would be helpful. I also personally purchased exhibit boards and writable DVDs for students to use.
3. Student Follow Trough. I do not have a great answer for this one. Perhaps having an earlier deadline for students and a school contest to acclimate them to
judge’s questions would be helpful.
